Taylor`s Corner

Hey everyone!  It’s heating up in the regular NHL right now and playoffs will soon be upon us.  The reason I know this is because all you hear lately is about trade deadlines and who’s going where.  It can all be very confusing and frankly, I’m having a hard time remembering who went where?!  After doing a bit of research to see who made the best trades, there are a few teams that have really beefed up for the playoffs.  I almost hate to say it, but I think Toronto made some pretty good trades at the wire.  The most important in MHP would have to be Owen Nolan.  Aha!  You thought I was going to say Doug Gilmour, didn’t ya!  No way did I support that trade!  I mean, come on…..Dougie was a pretty good player in his day but he’s 39 yrs old and fighting a lot of aches and pains now.  Proof in point, first game back with the Leafs, he injures himself on what seemed like a very innocent-looking collision.  Problem now is he’s out for 4-6 weeks and the Leafs have a void once again.  Let’s hope that Mr. Nolan can more than compensate for the missing Gilmour and Eddie (the Eagle) Belfour can keep his head about him.  In their present state, I don’t think this Leaf’s team could handle the Red Wings (who always seem to peak at playoff time) or the Devil’s who always seem to be underestimated.  Regardless, it should be very exciting in the playoffs this year.

Has anyone noticed how many great golfers Canada is turning out lately?  I’m sure the other pro’s have sat up and taken notice!  With Ladies first of course, Canadian golfer Lorie Kane established a new LPGA Tour record for lowest raw score after 54 holes with her 18-under-par 192 in the Welch's/Fry's Championship. She also smashed the tournament’s 54-hole record by eight shots. Kane will be in search of her fifth career victory on the LPGA Tour.  YOU GO GIRL!!!  And of course, there’s Mike Weir, who is likely better known in this area.  He has won twice in four starts so far this season; The Nissan Open and The Bob Chrysler Classic.  It amazes me that the media doesn’t give him more coverage?  Had it been Tiger, well now that’s a different story isn’t it….  Regardless, you’re still our guy Mike…. GO CANADA!

Last but not least, I try to pick a new sport each month to chat about.  This time it’s bowling.  How about that Walter Ray Williams Jr., who recently capped a record-breaking season with a victory at the 2003 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) World Championship at Taylor Sportsplex in Michigan.  The win earned the five-time PBA Player of the Year $120,000 and pushed his season total to a record $419,600.  I happened to actually watch the semi’s and final’s on satellite and being an amateur bowler myself, I can tell you… this guy is awesome!  If I had just 1/10 of his talent, I’m sure my league wouldn’t be talking trade right now!  LOL
