The Locker Room Review: July 21/2003
Hi Everyone! It's been a while since I checked in with you, but some recent events have triggered my reactionary reflex, so I must chime in. By the way, I hope you are all enjoying your summer. It seems there has been some player movement in the NHL… some good, some bad. First of all, I cannot believe Detroit has brought Hasek out of retirement to replace Cujo. There has to be more to this story than we all know, I’m sure. Did everyone forget Hasek’s last year in the league? Groin injury ring any bells? And in my opinion, Cujo played as well as the team in front of him. However, Federov leaving Detroit to go to Anaheim is a good move… for Detroit that is. It’s a well known fact that Sergei needs love, and lots of it. He was constantly massaged and coddled by Wings management and, to a lesser degree, his teammates. If it wasn't lack of ice time he was complaining about, it was the fans. Wah Wah Wah… get over yourself and get back to doing what you do best (play hockey) and the rest will happen naturally. I think he will be in for an eye-opener in Anaheim. And, hey at least Stevie Y will remain in Detroit for his 21st season… what else can you say? He’s a legend! Only TWO weeks NFL preseason starts… WOOHOO! So sorry… starting to get the fever already. It’s still real early to report where all the players have moved around to but after checking out some team reports, we are in for some great football this season folks! Mark your calendar, preseason starts August 2nd! Lastly, Ben Curtis has won the 132nd British Open… and who the heck is Ben Curtis??? Well, this 26 year old rookie from Kent, Ohio learned golf at his grandfather's public course in Ostrander, Ohio, population 405. He is believed to be the first player since Francis Ouimet in the 1913 U.S. Open to win playing in his first major and the first player to win the British Open on his first try since Tom Watson at Carnoustie in 1975. His career to date has only earned him less than $200,000 but I have a feeling he will be more popular with his five-year exemption in all the majors and a $1,112,720 paycheque… great time to win your first event Ben!
