Destroyer, A Tribute to Kiss
The Station, Thursday April 17/03

1976,(I think), Maple
Leaf Gardens. My buddies and I were dropped off in the middle of T.O. with
tickets in hand. Just a bunch of kids ready to see the band that we had been
impersonating, with the help of tennis rackets, for a couple of years. First big
concert, first live mega band, and first exposure to a packed arena that was
filled with a smokey smell that didn't seem to be from sweaty hockey players.
That night was one of the greatest nights of my life. I saw, kind of up-close,
KISS. They opened with their brand new song Detroit Rock City and proceeded to
blow my mind.
I tell you this story from the past, as I do with most of my
reviews, to let you know that I am basing my opinions on comparison to the real
thing. The band that appeared at the Station that Thursday night came as close
to the original that anyone could without using the space of an arena to explode
and fireball the experience into our heads. Their make up was perfect and they
weren't fat. They kept the crowd into it and played hit after hit from all the
albums old and new. If you think you might want to try a little of letting your
hair down and cutting loose with-out having to travel to Vegas for a
$200 a seat night than check these guys out sometime. Next it'll be Hendrix on
the 24th of April. Hats off to the Station for giving us something different.
